About the Award

This award has been created to honor the memory, innovative spirit, and contributions of Mohammed Dahleh to our scientific community and to the University of California, Santa Barbara. Awardees are selected based on their pioneering work, extraordinary accomplishments, and promise for exceptional contributions. Awardees are invited to deliver the Mohammed Dahleh Distinguished Lecture at UCSB in the second half of the academic year.

About Mohammed Dahleh

Mohammed Dahleh was a professor of Mechanical and Environmental Engineering and the research director of the Center for Control Engineering and Computation at UCSB. Under his leadership, the CCEC became a focal point for technological innovations. Professor Dahleh was an internationally recognized authority in the field of dynamical systems and control theory. His ground breaking research contributions reflected his wide-ranging interdisciplinary interests, spanning several areas of science, engineering, and applied mathematics. Today, the many research directions pioneered by Professor Dahleh continue to be followed by a growing number of researchers and to form the starting point for new discoveries and technological advancements. The Mohammed Dahleh lectureship was created to honor the memory, innovative spirit and contributions of the late UCSB Professor Mohammed Dahleh to the scientific community in general and UCSB in particular. Winners of the Mohammed Dahleh Award are invited to deliver the Mohammed Dahleh Distinguished Lecture at UCSB. The lectureship and the accompanying award have been funded by friends and relatives of Professor Dahleh, with the strong support of former UCSB Engineering Dean, Matt Tirrell.

Contributions to the MD Education Fund can be sent to Jan Adelson, College of Engineering, UCSB, Santa Barbara, CA 93106-5130. Checks should be payable to the UCSB Foundation.

Nominations

Nominations are sought from the UCSB community for candidates to receive the next Mohammed Dahleh Award. Candidates mush be mid-career researchers in any area of science or engineering who have shown extraordinary originality, and who show promise for significant future advances based on a demonstrated record of exceptional accomplishments. Persons with UCSB appointments are not eligible for the award.

Nominations should include a written nomination letter describing the qualifications of the candidate along with the candidate's CV. The nomination packet should be sent to the Selection Committe Chair:

Nominations must be received by mid-November. Nominations are evaluated by an independent Selection Committee composed of UCSB faculty from the College of Engineering and the College of Letters and Science. The winner is announced in early December.
